Rats

I don't know what's gotten into me but lately I have been obsessed with cute rat videos. I really want to adopt some little critters, but my lease prohibits rodents... and the per animal pet fee would be a lot and I am short on space in my appartment. But in the future I will get rats.

Notes on the making of this site

I don't remember how I discovered the Indieweb revival but I do remember that coming across Melon's site inspired me to create my own. I first learned HTML/CSS a long time ago as a kid on Kahn Academy, then in high school I took a college class about basic web design concepts, which re-ignited my interest. I also am in school doing CS now where I've picked up relevant skills, although I just switched out of Engineering to do a combined CompSci/Art major (I got burnt out lol). I currently manually write every page in HTML, but one of these days I will get tired of that and switch to using Astro. Tools: I code in VSCode with the Live Preview extension; my main browser is Firefox; I use GIMP and MSPaint for editing site graphics. I started with an inspo board of images I like and a drawing of the layout I was going for.

Then I made a mockup in GIMP:

And dusted off my CSS knowledge to create the basic layout:

Then it was the process of tweaking and adding on and googling every time I didn't know how to do something.


And now we are here! It's amature; it's buggy; it's sometimes low-effort; it's got typos; and it's not entirely mobile friendly, but it is mine <3.

Mending Party

2 weeks ago, I hosted a mending party at my appartment. I checked out a few relevant books at the library, bought some extra needles and scissors, collected my fabric stash from my mom's house, my lovely girlfriend prepared dinner (I helped a little), and invited a handful of friends over! It was a big success. I spent most of the party helping and getting people started on their projects, but I anticipated that and I've gotten my own mending started in the time since then. I want to keep it going and make it a regular thing.

Awesome! I recommend having lots of tables and/or floor space (I have TV trays) and something to snack on that doesn't get your fingers too messy. I sent out an invite that specified no experience necessary since most of my friends didn't know how to sew.


Things I provided:

  • Scissors: shears, thread snips, pinking shears
  • Needles, a variety of sizes
  • Pill bottles for folks to take home needles safely
  • Thimbles
  • Several colors of thread
  • Lace weight crochet yarn for darning
  • Scrap fabric and old jeans for patches
  • Straight pins and safety pins
  • Library books with instructions. Make Sew and Mend - Bernadette Banner I found most helpful

The only things I bought specifically for the party were extra needles and pinking shears; I already had a lot of the other supplies. I imagine it would be a-OK to just provide needles and thread, or ask folks to bring their own supplies. I also did not have a working sewing machine! You do not need a sewing machine to fix your clothes.

Old Scratch Projects

One day as a young loop in ye olde 2013, I came home from school and was excited to learn that the current month's issue of ASK had arrived in the mail. As I was reading through, I came across this article about Scratch. Via this website, I could drag and snap blocks together to code my own programs!
